On a wall inside the church is written "They Live We Sleep", a phrase that describes the fundamental different between the elite and the masses. Those in power have access to the means and the knowledge to live a full life while the rest of the population is sedated, dumbed-down and manipulated into a zombie-like status in order for it to be as easily manageable as possible by the masters.
