Is it a song about occult initiation? Some might interpret the song as a religious song, perhaps about Christianity. But the terminology used however strongly points to occult mysteries: reference to a phoenix (a metaphor of man’s spiritual rebirth), a sacrifice, light growing from inside (illumination), duality between heaven and hell, etc. What do you think?

The heaven and flames are symbolic of being between the two worlds. As above, so below. She knows she's going to be sacrificed and seems to be comfortable with it. The fact that she states that she needs 'your' strength is significant of the energy exchange involved in idol worship as well as ritualistic activities. All this simply equals how pothetic she is.

That's just one interpretation, it could just as easily be seen as a christian message. Think about it, she's the "chosen" one, she's bearing a cross, and she needs to "pray" (to God?) for "strength". I think it's way more obviously supposed to be about christianity than the occult, although it certainly could be interpreted both ways but this is a good time to apply the principle of parsimony and go with the simplest explanation.

That could be the sacrifice she's talking about. It seems to me that she is questioning her decision to turn from God/put Him in the back seat. Are we not allowed to experience different things? After all being an artist and songwriter is about expressing our feelings and thoughts with one another. These pop stars never strike me as interested in the occult, so either their image is fake and they are knowledgeable about the occult or they're handlers or writers are inputting these messages. I will say you people who are scared by this should not be. The occult or pagan philosophies aren't evil. It all depends on how its used. The symbols must be distorted to be considered black magic so for example, a five pointed star such as the Cowboys symbol must be distorted or turned upside down for it to have a negative energy. First of all I'm so excited that Vigilant posted this small article because I had emailed him asking about the lyrics to this song!! At first I truly did think this was a Christian song and was kind of inspired by it, but after reading about how Katy admitted to selling her soul I am inclined to think differently. When I first read these lyrics and listened to the video, my first impression was something religious. Then I looked at them a little harder and I understood the occult undertones. Something was bothering me that wouldn't go away in my mind, so I kept looking at it and examining it. Perhaps this song is occult in nature, but maybe she's "seeing the writing on the wall" and questioning "who she is living for." Perhaps she is realizing that there is a battle going on, chose the wrong side, and realizes that there will be a sacrifice on her part to walk a different path. She says it's "never easy to be chosen and never easy to be called" and that could refer to her affiliation and incredible success with the music industry. "This test that is her cross to bear" could refer to her making the sacrifice to give it all up and walk the path less traveled toward the heavens she can now see instead of the path she is currently walking, which she seems to believe is leading her to the flames.
I'm just trying to give this conversation something new to think about. Luckily for us, whether I'm right or wrong will be determined by her own actions and that's something we will all be able to see if it happens.

She seems unsure of who she's living for. Of course the fact that she says "who" and not "what" shows that she's probably talking about living either for God, or Satan, or her family, or herself.
Closing thoughts:
1. This is not a Christian song. It's on the album "Teenage Dream", which is very clearly not purporting Christian morals or ideals. Yes, it contains many Christian elements (Esther, light, etc.), but that's a no-brainer due to her Christian upbringing. Your upbringing does not make you a Christian, God makes you a Christian.
2. Read the song as a whole. It's all about her isn't it? The song doesn't focus or talk about God, it's a song talking about her decision to live a certain way. It's about who SHE is living for. So there's a rather self-absorbed vibe going on here, which isn't bad. Ok guys this song is clearly against the illuminati. I really hate the firework song. I found myself having to leave the room when it is played at work. I mean a spokesperson for inner beauty comming from a person who would be insignificant if she had a boob reduction and gained 35 pounds. I cringe when I hear people whose benifiting moslty through outer beauty try to sell to others, who are less fortunate with their looks, to look within is themselves and accept who they are. It's like eventhough using my body is what got me here, other people should look within. I guess she does not want competition. I recall watching the beverly hillbillies and Granny found the cure for the common cold. When her remidy started to appear that it didn't work, Granny indicated that you must rest for a few days, drink alot of fluids, eat soup first, ( thing you do anyways for a common cold) then take the medicine for it the remidy work. I thinking of a group of people who after taking Katy's advice of focusing within, finding that it did not work as they still see the more beautiful people appearing happier. They ask Katy " what happened, you plan did not work"? To which Katy replied " Oh! you must get a boob job and liposuction first then you'll experience blessing coming from looking within and be able to accept your place in life" The bible talks about humility, not focusing on self, but having total depedency on God as the key to peace. Only when you realize you can't achieve righteousness on your own is when you are lead to a faith of recieving God's. If a person feels they are blameless, without sin, they can't be forgiven or put their faith in grace. (How could a blameless person ask for mercy and forgiveness) Therefore a person does not want their own ways to work for themselves. You don't want to feel comforable if you don't have Christ. After reading the above blogs, What would concern me the most about Katy Perry (esecially if she did not recieve Christ in a way to be born again when she was young) is that if you feel like a Christian without Christ or You appear to be good enough through your own effort, why would you seek to ask Jesus into your life. I mean, when your about to conquere the world, Why would you ask for Jesus to come into your life and change your heart. He would just get in the way. Jesus tells us, "What does a man profit if he gains the whole world but loses his soul"

In the second verse after the first chorus she addresses God directly and asks for His favor "like Ester". "Heavy is the head that wears the crown" She feels this is an extremely risky and daunting task to undergo, but she will not "Let the greatness get (her) down". The points in the song when she sings with an English accent ("crowning bat'le" and "bol a light-en-ning") are nods to her English husband Russell Brand who clearly supports her in her charge of bringing her beliefs into the mainstream. The numerous biblical allusions (phoenix, cross to bear, being chosen, Heaven/Hell, writing on the wall, Holy War, inner light, Ester, sacrifice) all reference what Perry's struggle is about – giving into the mainstream or staying true to her religious beliefs. For Perry this is an incredibly deep song and an insight into her view of the media industry and what it all means to her. Will she give in? Or will we continue to see more songs like this from her?

Judging by the satanic garbage she puts out which gets mistaken for 'entertainment', it seems pretty clear who she's living for.
I think she is referring more to the heroes journey as proposed by Joseph Campbell. The idea of sacrifice is to sacrifice the symbolic part of you that is negative the pats of your psyche that cause you to feel less or to fail or to turn a blind eye. In sacrificing that part of your self psychologically you can become more balanced and change your point of view becoming more enlightened, being re born ( which happens in many religious stories, and fire can represent knowledge. A phoenix is re born from the ashes of flame, as far as I know there are prob many stories with differences ). I like this song and I have studied a great deal of myth religion and psychology. But this is just my opinion you can see things how you like I prefer to see everything in a positive sense no matter what it was intended as, I control how I see things and so does each one of us.
