The end has been the fixation of the human race from the beginning.

Whatever background you hail from, whether it be Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, Atheist, Gnostic or any other denomination, you undoubtedly grew up hearing some kind of tale about the end of days. Whether you are a follower of the Abrahamic faiths and the final curtain is the hand of God. Whether you are an atheist and your end of days lies contained in a syringe or is hurtling towards earth through space.

Whatever you are, the end can never leave your mind from the beginning and humanity has fixated on this 'goal' for the past several thousand years. It may not be on the mind in the day to day, but usually if you pay attention, your thoughts sometimes drift to your own mortality and the mortality of the race as a whole.

I would say that it is a necessity for beings who contemplate their world of beginnings and endings, to contemplate their own. However it has become a borderline obsession for many people today and I would go as far as to say that it is a bit unhealthy. Do you think it might be one of those self fulfilling prophesies? It's almost like the whole Earth has been waiting in anticipation for someone to create a weapon powerful enough to destroy the entire world, just to experience the End. But we want to get it done in one fell swoop right? We don't want to waste our time growing frail and weak in the core of a radioactive crater do we?

Like a grizzled warrior planning out his last battle, we who live by the sword have been drooling in anticipation for the next big explosion. One last explosion to drown out the din of angry ghosts.

I do not know many things, but I do know that mankind (on this Earth) is one of the sorriest, unhappiest, borderline suicidal entities I have ever come across. So unhappy that only the apocalypse can ease the pain.

I also know that this is only a half truth. Humanity is gullible and naive but also compassionate and idealistic. Most can envision the world as it should be, but have bought into thinking that it will never come about. Many have converted to a belief where the end of the world will bring untold happiness unto the human race or to the "true believers", already having forsaken the chance we have been given here.

Did we fail from the start?

All assuming there is no secret cabal of alien mind farmers enslaving us to the physical world, and using it to squeeze us for our emotional response, like a machine crushes oranges.

Cause' that is a whole nother' can of worms.

'"Did we fail from the start?"

People who hope for happiness in the uncertain next life are not doing the right things in this one.

Deep down everyone knows that they must act if they wish to change anything, most people don't and prefer to moan.

Hoping for an apocalyptic event on a whim to save everyone is oxymoronic.

Let's kill everyone to save them? That's crazy talk.

The moaning is what gets me! Endless groans about how bad the world is, but even louder groans when possible solutions come up. What if we all just dropped life as we know it and started anew in a spirit of good faith, admiration and compassion for our fellow beings? Not possible of course! Humanity is too perverted, sick, evil, selfish, fallow or any other disheartening pejorative some people can come up with, to effect a change like that.

It's like people have begun to fixate on our ability to do bad, to the detriment of our other natures. So fixated, that being evil is the default state for human beings, and being good an anomaly. It could easily be the other way around, but you know what Goku? Nobody in recorded history has ever pulled it off without some outside group stabbing them in the backs after taking gifts from their front.

It's hard to do but don't let the moans get to you, you're not the one moaning and that's the important part.

Not all of humanity is that way but it can be argued that quite a few are and from this stems the potential for it to get worse but on the other hand, it could also get better.

You're right bro, it should be the other way round but with so much suffering and negativity in existence, which we've brought upon ourselves, people are just not happy with society as a whole at the moment and this provokes people to become the pejoratives you stated however, there are people who see all of this and still make the effort to be a decent, respectful human being - we just need something to encourage that thought process to become more common.

This would hopefully reduce the amount of 'evil' and allow 'good' to prevail.

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." (Edmund Burke)

I have been looking into conspiracy theories, religious and paranormal stuff since I was a teenager. I have seen enough "doom porn" by now to know that most of it is BS. I am pretty sure that most of the worlds problems are caused by a small group of greedy, devil worshiping, child molesting, assholes who operate in secret and think themselves above the law. If this group were removed, permanantly (re, they go to hell), the world would be a better place overnight. This is the day we hope for and have waited for patiently for thousands of years. Some may try to expadite the process but ultimately it is a matter determined by God alone. None know the day or the hour. If people really knew what judgement day was like, they wouldn't wish for it. It is inevitable really, believers should always keep it in mind and have fear and hope for that day but we can only really do anything in the here and now.

We all have some good and some evil in our hearts. We are all faced with the choice between living a good or evil life. For thousands of years our prophets have been saying that the time is close. Indeed it is, when we die we no longer have to choose between good or evil, we have been tested by the trials of life and our souls wait for the last day so they can be judged. Whether a person died yesterday or a thousand years ago, it makes no difference to their souls because our souls are immortal and are not affected by the passage of time.

If (and its a big "if" to me, because I am fairly certain of things) I am wrong about God and the last day and life being a test and it is simply an empty void waiting for me when I die. I will still find peace in that emptiness. Even if there is no heaven, I would still like to say I lived a good life, being kind and helping people out. That is the way things should be.

I know the bad things can be all too easy to focuss on, the world is a terrible place and it always has been really, but its not all bad. Like Gandhi said, we should 'Be the change that you wish to see in the world.'

Very thought provoking thread HongKongHoward Smile

Deuteronomy 30:19  `I have caused to testify against you to-day the heavens and the earth; life and death I have set before thee, the blessing and the reviling; and thou hast fixed on life, so that thou dost live, thou and thy seed

Since the beginning God has given us a choice...to choose life or death..blessing or cursing.  Even for those who don't acknowledge the Abrahamic God, this choice is till there every day and you don't need to be a believer to experience the benefits or choosing life and blessing.   I agree with Creeper, that there is a minority elite who choose death and cursing over the planet for their own gain, but if the majority of the people on a daily basis chose life and blessing it would be enough to overcome that.  Unfortunately we have been conditioned by our world to look out for ourselves and that selfishness causes many to choose death and cursing more often than life and blessing.

The best any of us can do is to make a difference in the individual lives around us.  Again I agree with Creeper any attempt by a minority to overcome the elite will be unsuccessful...but those of us who do trust in the Abrahamic God have the promise of the day when God will reveal himself completely and destroy the works of evil in this present age. Because the Apocalypse is so often tied to the the hope of the next "age" that is where some of the fascination with it comes from.

Then shall the king say to those on his right hand, Come ye, the blessed of my Father, inherit the reign that hath been prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

And the king answering, shall say to them, Verily I say to you, Inasmuch as ye did to one of these my brethren -- the least -- to me ye did

There are some who believe that watching the world end is next best to watching it begin. Perhaps so many want for it to end so that it CAN begin again. Let's face it, a lot of stuff on this planet (mainly stuff we created) needs to be eradicated. "Progress" of mankind, and mankind itself, has caused more Earthly problems than anything else. Wtf do we do as a whole that actually benefits this planet? Nothing. As a whole we shrug our shoulders, do what we can as individuals, pretend like recycling makes a difference (it all ends up in the dump here. Yet we are made to recycle.), and we dream of a better world. I'm pretty sure that most of us picture this better world with a lot less destructive humans as well. Or maybe some form of off-grid living.

People as individuals are not bad. But still, humans are probably the one creature this planet would actually be better off without. Animals can be sick and disgusting too (even the cute looking ones can be murderous), but you they don't destroy to create. Birds take what's needed to build nests, beavers may cut down trees to build dams, but they don't clear out entire forests to build subdivisions or roads or whatever. Pave paradise to put up a parking lot type of thing....

What was the point of this thread?

In a nut shell:

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened......Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them, for they exchanged to the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.....

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in there own persons due penalty of their error.

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inverntors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understandsing, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although the they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death,  they not only do the same,  but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  1John 4:1

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

The point is that someone who is utterly absorbed with the last days, might be able to find an ounce of perspective here. So often I preach to the choir, but maybe some lurkers find meaning in our words.

Great post, HKH! The idea of an apocalypse (violence, pestilence, cataclysm, etc) is one of the primary mind control strategies used for control and manipulation of humanity. It's akin to a computer program or a script that has been inserted into the majority of socially-acceptable belief systems so that the thought process becomes an automatic unconscious reaction. This way, the idea is held as an intention within the personal thoughts of many people, and therefore is given consent even without the formation of an actual conscious decision. The knowledge of personal intent is mostly hidden from the public, so it's very easily exploited for reinforcement of the fear-based programs used to suppress human consciousness.
