I would say we should be asking what the issues and challenges are that is facing our world today, and how we can go about resolving them, as opposed to blaming a supposed cabal of elite individuals. I am not saying such entities/ organisations do not exist, but rather that it is wholly nonconstructive to place blame externally. We typically do this, and project negative characteristics outwards, when we have not performed the necessary self work to accept those potentials within ourself in a compassionate manner.
Want change? Make the change within yourself, and do so on a localised basis. Society is an amalgamation of individuals, and each person is a part of the whole, so the work needs to be done on a personal level, before it is seen on a collective level. Microcosm -> Macrocosm. Changes are automatically seen outwards in ones reality tunnel when courage is taken to move forward and accept responsibility. If you do not prefer your current experience, then do something about it. Dismantling those limiting beliefs/ideas you may have been conditioned into about your reality is a good first step.
I myself used to relate, and identify with the pain, negativity, and 'horror' of the world (like many may do on this site). Truth be told, this was due to a lack of personal responsibility. I blamed the outside, whereas it was myself that needed change, and to accept the capacity for that spectrum of action within myself. Quit blaming the world for your woes, and do something about it. Nothing is inherently negative or positive, but it is the meaning we choose to apply to said event/experience, which dictates the feedback we will receive. So called 'Evil' exists as catalyst for positive growth and change, if seen in such a manner. It is a positive feedback and tool for reflection, but again if it is seen in such a manner. The choice is yours. It always has and it always will be.
In any case, on a more practical level (and relating to the thread Q at hand) you are the 99%. A rudimentary knowledge of Maths will tell you 99% > 1%. They do not have any real power, and the perception that they do stems from what you give them. Society is changing however, and we've made alot of progress in many areas over time. And that's what it will take, time. That's not to say you can't do something about your own world, now.
"We check and repress the divinity that stirs within us, to fall down and worship the divinity that is dead without us."
-- Henry David Thoreau, 1851
