Quote:White people owe it to her because they caused it.

A 29-year-old Thai-Cambodian woman has launched a fundraiser asking her “white friends” to pay for her therapy — claiming that they owe it to her because stress caused by racism is why she needs it in the first place.

Rinna Rem is from the Portland, Ore., area and suffers from a chronic illness that affects the heart and connective tissues called “Marfan syndrome.” According to Rem, the condition is much worse for her because of all of the racism.

“The stress of living as a Thai-Cambodian woman in such a white city replete with constant interpersonal and institutional racism has a big toll on my health and wellbeing,” Rem wrote in the description of her campaign, which is appropriately titled “White Friends, Pay for My Therapy.”

“I see an amazing therapist to cope with this s[***], but I spend $100/month on therapy for bi-weekly appointments,” she continued. “Now it’s your turn to pay!”

At the time of publication, Rem had raised $1,160 of her $1,200 goal so far. She told the Daily Dot that although her original goal was $600, she decided to raise it after reading hateful posts about her campaign on Reddit.

“That caused more emotional distress, which I knew I would spend a lot of time processing in therapy,” she said.

Rem also told the Daily Dot that some of her friends of color had attempted to donate, but she told them not to:

“I tell them, ‘No no no, this is for my white friends,’” she said.

If she exceeds her goal, Rem said she will begin attending therapy on a weekly instead of bi-weekly basis.

The thing that kills me is that people have actually given her money.

Everyone is racist, but only white people are made to feel guilty for it.

This lady is obviously in the wrong and anyone that gives her money is just supporting nonsense like this.

Also not everyone is racist. Just because you're a racist doesn't mean everyone else is.

İmage

We are compassionate and certainly would not want to be so cruel to her as to force her to stay where her heart is not.
1200 USD most definately would cover a USA-Cambodia ticket.

bye bye

Didnt some dude raise 40 grand for potato salad?

I guess this is for therapy at least, I can understand the lack of self worth that comes from institutional racism and ostracism however this was poorly phrased. Way to be divisive.

There is no one on the planet upon whom social forces have not caused harm and neurosis I do think we are becoming a traumaporn culture, everyone has PTSD and something suddenly traumatising and life shattering neednt have happened.

Everything has a trigger warning it used to be the case that in classes were extreme violence, genocide, rape were discussed lecturers would have notes in the syllabus as a warning, now I get constant emails way in advance and the lead up and over trivial things being 'tw'ed

Everyone is racist to a degree, just not everyone admits it.

I don't think I'm better or worse than any other race, but I hold what people might term "prejudiced" views on other races based on my experience and friendships with them.  Doesn't everybody?  That's what I mean by racist.

I'm white but my wife is Asian.  She makes fun of Asians all the time.  Am I racist if I agree with her?  I'm not burning crosses.  I'm laughing at Asians because they're so annoying sometimes that it's hilarious, and I know this because I am married to one.

I hope that makes sense, but I can see how it might not.

I wouldnt call that racism, cultural/ethnic bias yes, racism no. Racism to me bespeaks of the early scientific racism were pseudo-science was invoked to dehumanise other people, mostly Africans and indigenous folks of colonised lands. This overt racism has since metamorphosed and doesn't seek psuedo-scientific grounding any more but is still very much present in people's attitudes and reflected institutionally (the psuedo-science inferior race thing is not taken seriously in general social circles, Stormfront et al still take this view seriously even though it is so massively debunked and rightfully so)

Even though humans like novelty we are creatures of familiarity. We like familiarity with the occasional novel experience. And as such we tend to gravitate and seek kin in familiar circles. This has more to do with a shared intersubjective space, so shared communal values, rituals, language, religion if its applicable. There are ways to bridge the gulf of course and as the world is more globalised some of the mammoth differences are fading enabling more interaction if it wasnt for migration patterns it is unlikely you and your wife would have ever met.

And as for making fun of various cultures it depends where it comes from I guess, I routinely make fun of other slavic people, my boyfriend who is anglo-celtic does too, rightfully so we are strange beasts. But it isnt from a place of ignorance (i.e. he knows my culture and is part of it through me and my family) or harmful. Nor is it to propagate hate and malice.
